If you run your website or blog using WordPress platform with your own domain and web hosting, you probably notice that your URL look like this www.yourdomain.com/?p=201 when you click on your post. The number placed after your domain name is your post ID number, but it doesn’t look as nice as some of the other options. WordPress named their URL with a dynamically generated sequential number by default. You can change this setting for a better search engine result.
Why you need to do this?
Google cannot give a better search engine result if they cannot read what your article is about. They need to spider your site to figure out. In other hand, if you use something like this www.yourdomain.com/postname/ Google can figure out immediately what the article is about. You will have much better chance of showing up in the search engine results using a SEO friendly URL than the dynamic one.
How to change this?
OK. First you need to login to your WordPress. In WordPress control panel go to options and click on Permalink. In Permalink setting, you have five choices for displaying your URL: Default, Day and name, Month and name, Numeric and Custom structure. Date and name base or Custom structure is the most search engine friendly. As you can see, my site using the Custom structure which looks something like this www.grouperblog.com/where-to-start-to-make-money-online/ . Its show my domain name followed by post name. The Custom structure to do this is /%postname%/. You can check out how to use permalink here.
Save your setting after choosing your preferred URL display. Click preview your site to see what you have done. If your website dint show up and prompting some error, then you need to changes your .htaccess file. WordPress will automatically rewrite for you if your file were writable. If not, then you need to rewrite manually. To do this is very simple. Don’t worry if you don’t know where to find your .htaccess file. Just send the code to your hosting company support and they will do for you. After everything is set, you will see your URL display, as you want it.
